Dear Reader,
You may have turned up at this link due to a Google search on me, "Lance Spicer".
This link is shown in a thread on the www.investored.com.au . It was brought to my attention by two loyal readers (thanks Jeff and Bryan) that some comments had been made about my book, The Tax Solution. Well, I would like address those comments.
The administrator is Nigel Ward and he made some comments about the book, namely that it is "massively over promising and under delivering". I can verify that Mr Ward has indeed bought my book, The Tax Solution, having purchased the 2006 ebook version. Mr Ward used to work for a law firm ( I am presuming he's a lawyer, so I better be nice) so, I think his comments should be put into context. I think he's coming from a "technical viewpoint" that my book may be lacking in case law references and references to the Tax Act etc. I am only guessing here because he never let me know the book was not to his liking. If he had, I would have addressed his concerns personally at the time. I would also like to point out that he hasn't bought any other books from us.
However, being an accountant myself, and having worked in a tax specialist role for companies like Hooker Corporation, Mirvac, Hambros, Macquarie Bank and Daikyo Australia, I can understand where he's coming from. However, this is not a book for tax or law professionals (CCH www.cch.com.au already produce far more technical books in that regard). I wrote this book for ordinary Australians looking for some easy ways to save on their tax. I wrote it in the simplest way I could, without jargon, without getting caught up in endless references to cases, legislation, references back to the Act and so on so regular people without a law degree could understand and implement the ideas. Tax is already boring and confusing enough without me adding to the misery. I was creating a solution to tax issues for regular people - hence the name - The Tax Solution. It is a simple read that delivers the best legal ideas I could come up with without getting too bogged down with very specific areas of structuring and other very technical areas that may have appealed to Mr Ward.
Bottom Line: Mr Ward clearly did not like the early edition of the book and he his entirely entitled to his opinion. I can also understand that from his point of view that it may be lacking in certain areas, but this was done deliberately so I didn't write a "Tax Text Book", which I could have done, but then I wouldn't have had the broad appeal which enabled me to help many people, which was my original goal. At the request of readers, I have included case and Act references where the tips in my books seem a little obscure (which may have satisfied Mr Ward) in my latest edition. However, as Mr Ward said, it's "horses for courses", and in this regard, The Tax Solution is a book for "non tax professionals".
If any reader, like Mr Ward, thinks my book, "massively over promises and under delivers", I will personally refund your money. If Mr Ward wants to call my office, I will happily refund his money too. Most of my customers who have bought it and read it, have stated that they have thought the book "just brilliant". It is one of my best-sellers and promotes the most favourable email feedback.
At the end of the day, it's my personal and professional integrity at stake here, and it's of the utmost importance to me. If I can improve my books and the way I help people, let me know as I'll always take comments on board, here's my personal email address, spicer@tridentpress.com.au
Kind Regards,
Lance Spicer

Lance Spicer has been an accountant and professional investor for nearly 30 years. Here is what he has to say about this package of "best selling" books......
"I put together this package of my books for the average investor to assist them to build wealth and save on tax. They are deliberately written in a casual style so they make sense and are understandable for non-financial people. So, I avoid complex concepts, unusual situations and difficult jargon. I keep it simple and easy to apply."
"While our books are popular with accounting firms and professional organisations, they were not written for them. They were written for average people."
"If you find these books unhelpful, or they don't live up to your expectations, let me know, and I will refund your money, no questions asked."
